Early wipe, scrap comes from barrels and crates plus whatever their components recycle into. Mid wipe it shifts to monument loops, puzzle rooms, diving and NPC kills, where military crates, elite crates and gun parts pay far better. Every barrel gives a flat 2 scrap, so the real money is never the barrel itself but the components and the tea you drink before hitting it.
Scrap per container
Guaranteed scrap per container, from the official Rust wiki loot tables:
| Source | Scrap | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Blue or yellow barrel | 2 | 100% |
| Basic crate | 3 | 100% |
| Brown crate, tool crate | 5 | 100% |
| Underwater basic crate | 5 | 100% |
| Military crate | 8 | 100% |
| Tech parts crate, vehicle parts crate | 8 | 100% |
| Underwater advanced crate | 10 | 100% |
| Train wagon military crate | 11 | 100% |
| Elite crate | 25 | 100% |
| Scientists | 8 to 24 | 36.3% |
| Supply drop | 140 to 160 | 55.6% |
| Locked (hackable) crate | 140 to 160 | 33.3% |
The listed scrap is only the guaranteed roll. Crates also drop components, and those usually double what you walk away with once you recycle them.
Day one: roads, barrels and scrap tea
The classic opener is a road run. Barrels and crates line every road and junk pile, and each barrel can also drop pipes, springs, gears, road signs and the occasional fuse (1.4% per barrel). Fill up, then recycle at the nearest monument or safe zone.
Scrap tea is what turns this from slow into worth it. All three versions only boost scrap from barrels:
| Tea | Scrap bonus | Duration | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Scrap Tea | +100% | 30 min | 2 yellow berries, 2 white berries |
| Advanced Scrap Tea | +225% | 45 min | 4 Basic Scrap Tea |
| Pure Scrap Tea | +350% | 1 hour | 4 Advanced Scrap Tea |
Mix them at a Mixing Table or Cooking Workbench (5 seconds each). If you have a berry farm going, a pure tea before a long barrel route is the single best scrap multiplier available to a fresh spawn. Water junk piles count too; a boat with low grade fuel lets you hit them along the coast with less competition.
Recycle everything you are not using
Recycling is where barrel runs actually pay out. At a monument recycler with the grid powered, a rifle body is 30 scrap, tech trash and electric fuses are 24, gears and springs 12, pipes and road signs 6. Safe zone recyclers give two thirds of that.
Since Power Trip (August 2026), monument recyclers sit at 50% until the Power Plant has enough heavy fuses, then 60%. Outpost and Bandit Camp stay at 40%. The recycler guide has the full component table and which monuments have one.
Monument loops
Once you have a weapon and some meds, monuments beat roads on scrap per minute.
- Low tier (Supermarket, Gas Station, Lighthouse, Junkyard, harbors, Sewer Branch, Satellite Dish). Crates, barrels and a recycler on site. Supermarket, Gas Station, Lighthouse and Junkyard also have a free green keycard spawn.
- Puzzle rooms. A green or blue room gives several crates in one locked space, plus a keycard and Basic Blueprint Fragments. Since November 2025 the room's refresh timer only starts once someone loots a container inside. Route details are in the keycard puzzles guide.
- High tier (Launch Site, Military Tunnels, Missile Silo). Military crates (8 scrap) and elite crates (25 scrap) in numbers, and the elites drop rifle bodies. Facepunch shuffled most monument loot spawns in October 2025, so older crate-by-crate routes may be wrong.
- Junkyard. The magnet crane and car shredder turn wrecked cars into scrap. It needs low grade fuel and draws attention, but it is reliable.
Scientists and events
Standard scientists (monument, boat and patrol variants) have a 36.3% chance to drop 8 to 24 scrap, and the same chance to drop a green keycard. Road scientists and Bandit Camp guards drop less often (23.6% and 16.7%). Clearing scientists at a monument you are already looting adds up fast.
Locked crates (Oil Rigs, Cargo, Chinook drops) carry a one in three chance at 140 to 160 scrap. Supply drops roll the same amount at 55.6%. Both attract every group on the server, so treat them as a bonus, not a plan.
Diving
Underwater crates give 5 (basic) or 10 (advanced) scrap and have a 14.3% fuse chance on the advanced ones. Underwater Labs have their own military and elite crates with the same 8 and 25 scrap as on land.
Diving got cheaper in November 2025: tanks refill for free at a repair bench, and the DPV (underwater scooter) can be bought at the Fishing Village and now needs metal fragments instead of HQM to craft. It is still a quiet way to farm while the surface is a war zone.
Fishing
Fishing villages have a fish exchange vending machine that buys fish for scrap. The better fish need better bait, and prices are set by the vendor, so check the machine before committing to a species. Since the April 2026 Spring Clean update, a spot that gets overfished only gives junk until it repopulates. Fish traps are not affected. It is slow, but it is close to zero risk and works well for solos off a boat.
Trading at Outpost and Bandit Camp
The safe zone vending machines run both ways: they sell gear for scrap and buy some resources for scrap, and Bandit Camp's merchants take materials like HQM. Exchange rates change, so open the machines before you haul a load over. Do not count on keycards as a scrap source; the Outpost no longer sells blue cards as of the November 2025 update.
Two scrap sinks to know about: the Bandit Camp wheel (the house wins over time) and the Apartment Complex added in July 2026, where room and shop rent is paid in scrap.
A rough plan
- First hour. Road barrels with tea if you have berries, recycle at the nearest monument.
- First evening. Green card from a low-tier monument, run one green and one blue room. That covers the crates, a red card and three Basic Blueprint Fragments.
- Mid wipe. Military and elite crate loops, diving or Junkyard, and recycle gun parts you do not need.
Spend it with a plan. The workbench and tech tree guide lists what the key BPs cost now that research prices have dropped, and the crafting calculator works out the rest.
