The Weapon Barrel is a Steam inventory container in Rust that opens into one random weapon or tool skin. It was selling for around $7.91 on the Steam Community Market as of October 2026, and you can also craft it from 10 metal, 5 cloth and 5 wood, the materials you get from breaking down skins. For most players, buying the exact AK or Thompson skin you want costs less than the barrel itself.
This is not the oil or loot barrel you smash on the road for scrap. It is a cosmetic item that only exists in your Steam inventory.
What the Weapon Barrel is
It is one of four skin containers you can craft from the Inventory page in Rust's main menu, next to the Low Quality Bag, the High Quality Bag and the High Quality Crate. Each covers a different slot. The barrel's Steam description says it holds skins for weapons and tools, meaning anything the player holds in their hands: guns, melee weapons, hatchets, pickaxes and the like.
You open it in the same inventory screen. No key is needed (the Rust market doesn't have any key items), so the barrel is the only cost.
Crafting cost
Skin containers are crafted from three Steam inventory materials: wood, metal and cloth. You get them by breaking down skins you own. Per Corrosion Hour, weapon skins break into metal, clothing and armor into cloth, and deployables into wood. Every skin breaks down into exactly 1 unit of its material, no matter what the skin is worth, so the skin crafting guide is worth reading before you scrap anything.
| Container | Crafting cost |
|---|---|
| Low Quality Bag | 10 cloth, 1 wood |
| High Quality Crate | 5 cloth, 10 wood |
| High Quality Bag | 70 cloth, 5 wood, 1 metal |
| Weapon Barrel | 10 metal, 5 cloth, 5 wood |
The bag and crate recipes show up the same way in several guides, and the Rust Fandom wiki agrees on the High Quality Bag. The Weapon Barrel recipe of 10 metal, 5 cloth and 5 wood comes from Steam's own item data, mirrored by SCMM. Still, check the crafting screen before you break down anything you care about, since Facepunch can change recipes. The skin crafting guide walks through the breakdown and craft steps.
What can drop
Any weapon or tool skin in the barrel's pool. That covers the obvious guns (AK, Thompson, MP5, Bolt, Python, SAR) plus melee weapons and tools.
What I could not verify is the exact pool or the odds. There is no official drop table that I could find. SkinLords claims more than 1,200 weapon and tool skins and says new ones get added over time, but it gives no list, and I would not trust store-bought skins to be in there without proof. Community guides name the Alien Relic SMG as the dream pull. It had no active Steam listing when I checked, so I can't give you a current price for it. A September 2025 write-up describes its drop rate as "near zero", which matches what every player who has opened a stack of these will tell you.
The realistic result is a cheap gun skin. Here is what the cheapest skins for popular weapons were listing for on Steam on October 24, 2026:
| Weapon | Skins listed on Steam | Cheapest listing |
|---|---|---|
| Assault Rifle (AK) | 287 | $0.70 |
| Python Revolver | 85 | $0.72 |
| MP5 | 81 | $0.84 |
| Bolt Action Rifle | 38 | $0.85 |
| Thompson | 70 | $1.10 |
Those counts include item store skins, not just container drops, so they say nothing about your odds. They do show where the floor sits: under a dollar for most guns.
Tradability and price
The Weapon Barrel is tradable and marketable. Steam's listing data shows a 7-day restriction before a barrel bought on the market can be traded or relisted.
Prices as of October 24, 2026:
- Steam Community Market: lowest listing $7.91, median sale $7.96, about 206 sold in the previous 24 hours
- Third-party sites run cheaper; Rust Help showed one at $6.03
- Rust Help's history puts the all-time high at $19.81 in January 2021, so it has been well over double today's price before
That makes it the second most expensive of the four containers. On the same day the High Quality Bag listed at around $11.12, the High Quality Crate at $2.58 and the Low Quality Bag at $1.65.
Barrel vs buying skins directly
Buy the skin. The numbers are lopsided.
At about $7.91, one barrel costs the same as roughly eleven of the cheapest AK skins on the market, or about seven of the cheapest Thompson skins. If you open one, the most likely outcome is a skin that lists for a dollar or two, on a gun you might not even use. Selling that skin on Steam also costs you a fee, so you lose more on the way out.
Buying directly means:
- You pick the weapon (an AK skin matters a lot more than a Waterpipe skin for most players)
- You pick the look
- You usually pay less than a single barrel
The barrel only makes sense in two cases. One is if you already have the metal, cloth and wood from breaking down junk skins and want a free roll. Even then, compare it with just selling the barrel for close to $8. The other is if you enjoy opening cases and accept the expected loss as the cost of the fun.
If you want a gamble with a lower buy-in, the High Quality Crate costs about a third as much, though it only drops deployables.
